Blended Retirement System: Mandatory training for all E-6 and above


As the fall air turns crisp and the holidays draw ever closer, so does the Dec. 31, 2016 deadline to complete the Blended Retirement System (BRS) Leader Training. The BRS Leader Training is designed to inform our front line supervisors across the service of how the new Blended Retirement System will work. The BRS, established by the National Defense Authorization Act of 2016, is a stated initiative under the Commandant’s Human Capital Strategy, or HCS.

The BRS Leader Training is mandatory for all E-6 and above to ensure leadership is properly prepared to assist their people in understanding they have a decision to make; either opting into the new Blended Retirement System or remaining in the Legacy Retirement System. Civilian supervisors are highly recommended to complete the BRS Leader Training as well.

The Leader Training is available on the Joint Knowledge Online (JKO) portal on both CAC and non-CAC enabled computers. The training is available to members across the Coast Guard, regardless of rank or grade, and those that are not mandated are also highly encouraged to complete the short 30-minute online course.

In addition to the online Leader Training, the Leader Pocket Card will allow supervisors to carry a portable guide with them so they can provide accurate information to their subordinates about the new Blended Retirement System. A printable version of the Leader Pocket Card can be found here.




Future Training:

The next training course to expect will be the BRS Opt-In Training Course, which will be made available in January 2017 to members with less than 12 years of service by Dec. 31, 2017. This course will be available for all of calendar year 2017 to provide members ample time to take it before they will need to make their decision to opt-in or stay in the current system. This course will have a retirement calculator utility that will allow members to compare their own retirement benefits under the current retirement system and under the BRS.

Again, the new BRS will be available starting Jan. 1, 2018, and individuals with less than 12 years of total service by Dec. 31, 2017 can choose to opt in at any point during the 2018 calendar year. BRS opt-in will close Dec. 31, 2018. New accessions on or after Jan. 1, 2018 will automatically be enrolled in the BRS.
