Feds Feed Families: A 225th birthday challenge:

Volunteers assist food bank

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, USDA, in partnership with the Chief Human Capital Officers Council, is sponsoring the seventh annual Feds Feed Families Food Drive. While our economy continues to recover, both local and nation-wide food banks face severe shortages and families in need remain in danger of going hungry. Since the campaign began in 2009, federal employees have donated over 39.3 million pounds of food and non-perishable and perishable goods to support families in need across the country. This year’s campaign is “Feds Fighting Hunger” and begins July 15 – October 2.

In honor of our 225th Birthday, Coast Guard senior leadership has set a service-wide goal to encourage employee participation in this initiative. We would like 1,000 individuals, units, or offices to pledge to raise or donate 225 pounds of food. This would bring our Coast Guard contribution to 225,000 pounds of food and more than triple last year’s total.

Individuals can also become Hall of Famers. To become a “Federal Government” Hall of Famer you must individually raise the following food pounds: Silver Hall Fame: 750, Gold Hall of Fame: 1,500, and Platinum Hall of Fame: 3,000. Visit here for a list of suggested donation items.

This drive is part of the presidential initiative, United We Serve, which encourages participation in community service activities. The Combined Federal Campaign is the only authorized solicitation of employees in the Federal workplace on behalf of charitable organizations. However, there is an exception for the solicitation of gifts-in-kind, such as food, clothing, and toys. This food drive is allowed under that exception.

A kick-off event is scheduled to be held at Coast Guard Headquarters on July 30, 2015. Employees outside the District of Columbia metropolitan area are also urged to participate in their local area food drives. To find information about food drives in your area, visit the Feeding America or Federal Executive Boards websites.

To sign up for the 225 pound pledge, report your totals, or find additional information about this initiative, please contact the 2015 Feds Feed Families Champion, Ms. Robin Dorsey. To sign up, provide the name of the person, office, or unit making the pledge, and a designated point of contact to work with our champion Robin Dorsey.
