Each and every day across the nation, Coast Guard men and women play a crucial role to accomplish a variety of missions for the Department of Homeland Security.

This year, the Secretary of Homeland Security recognized the hard work, sacrifices and professional excellence of members across the department, including members of the U.S. Coast Guard. On Oct. 23, Secretary Jeh Johnson honored 312 employees from across the department for performing above and beyond their normal call of duty and for their extraordinary efforts to protect our homeland. Of those recognized, 25 of the recipients were men and women from the U.S. Coast Guard.

“We value the service, the volunteer service, the acts of valor of every single man and woman in this department,” said Johnson in his remarks at the award ceremony. “There is no more important mission by a government on behalf of its people than homeland security. Each of you can take great satisfaction in knowing that you have done your job well and you’re doing an important job. This is, in these times, particularly important given the range of threats and risks that we face to homeland security today.”
