Take Action: Earth Day and Volunteer Month: The perfect opportunity to help our planet

April 22 is Earth Day and since this month is also Volunteer Month, it is a perfect opportunity to highlight ways to help our planet. It’s a chance to think about how our actions impact our environment. Volunteering on Earth Day is a great thing to do — you can join efforts to plant trees or pick up trash in your community. Aside from volunteering for an organized event, there are actions you can take on a daily basis to do your part in protecting our planet. Check out the blog to learn more!

Take Action: Alcohol Awareness Month – Think before you drink

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, designed to increase command awareness and understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage people to focus on alcohol-related issues. The effects of alcohol misuse and abuse continue to be significant for the Coast Guard and have an impact on our ability to execute our missions. It’s your duty to protect your shipmates if they’re at risk of hurting themselves or someone else. Intervening early and at low levels, such as by asking an intoxicated member if he/she has a plan for transportation home or ensuring he/she is not left alone, makes it less likely that the situation will escalate. In other words, taking action early should curtail or put an end to the dangerous situation, thus preventing an alcohol incident.

Take Action: Month of the Military Child – Support military kids through sports

Think back to your youth. Do you have a favorite sports team that dates back to when you were just a kid? If you grew up in just one location, maybe your team is a no-brainer. But for many military children, who might live in multiple cities during their young life, that question could be more difficult. However, there is one team that they should always be able to count on, and that is Team Coast Guard! And in the case of this story, the United Heroes League and the Washington Capitals also have our military children’s backs. April is Month of the Military Child; take time to support our military children!

Take Action: Sexual Assault Awareness Month – Attend Bystander Interactive Training

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and during this month, the Coast Guard will roll out Bystander Intervention Training (CG BIT). CG BIT is an interactive training that contains a blend of practical exercises and discussion based scenarios designed to motivate and mobilize people who may see, hear, or recognize signs of inappropriate or unsafe situation to act. As leaders (and we are all leaders), we need to not only assess our command climate, we need to assess how well we are helping our shipmates understand what is and is not acceptable behavior and the connections between sexual harassment and sexual assault. Both sexual assault and sexual harassment are incompatible with our Core Values and service in the Coast Guard.
