Inspire: Lt. Cmdr. Robyn Swan

Lt. Cmdr. Robyn Swan, the executive officer of Port Security Unit 309, is the second of eight members that will be highlighted in the Inspire blog series. Swan is the recipient of the 2017 Witherspoon Reserve Inspirational Leadership for navigating her unit through a member’s suicide, a sexual assault case, and the high operational tempo demands during the Republican National Convention.

General Messages Weekly Round-up

This week’s message round-up includes the announcement of the 2016 Capt. Carden and BM1 Cullen Maritime Security and Response Operations Excellence award and the 2017 Federal Asian Pacific American Council Meritorious Service Award winners. Submission solicitations for the 2017 NAACP Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award and 2017 League of United Latin American Citizens Excellence in Public Service Award are due at the end of April 2017.

The Chief Journalist Alex Haley Award, named for the renowned author, recognizes achievements of individual authors and photographers whose published works have helped to raise the visibility of the Coast Guard. Links to the winning submissions can be found here.


The newest ‘Ancients’ – Introducing the Gold and Silver Ancient Tridents

Today the Coast Guard inducted the first Gold and Silver Ancients Tridents, Rear Adm. Linda L. Fagan and Master Chief R. Shane Hooker respectively. The tradition of naming a Coast Guard community’s “Ancient” dates back to 1966, when aviators created the Ancient Albatross, a title developed to recognize the longest serving pilot in the Coast Guard. The Gold and Silver Ancient Tridents are titles given to the officer and enlisted member who have served in the Marine Safety community the longest. The Marine Safety field operations include vessel and facility inspection, waterways management, pollution response and marine casualty investigations.


From the Homefront: Ombudsman who serves seven units selected for award

Rachel Conley was selected as the Wanda Allen-Yearout Coast Guard Ombudsman of the Year. The award recognizes an ombudsman each year who has shown exceptional commitment to supporting Coast Guard families, and it was named after a woman who worked tirelessly more than 30 years ago to help build an ombudsman program for the service.
