ALCOAST 283/17 – Substance Abuse Prevention: That Guy Campaign

One of the tools available to address the consequences of excessive drinking on your installation is the “That Guy” campaign developed by the Department of Defense in 2005. The “That Guy” (and companion “That Girl” campaign) is designed to reduce binge drinking among junior enlisted personnel across all branches of service. The campaign has adopted an edgy approach using humor to exemplify social disapproval of “That Guy;” depicted as anyone who has a few too many drinks that result in embarrassing consequences.

ALCOAST 282/17 – Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). This month’s theme is “Be the Change, Prevent Domestic Violence.” This annual observance offers the opportunity to raise awareness, highlight resources available to support victims of domestic violence and families in need, renew efforts to build healthy relationships, and promote offender accountability. Domestic violence remains a critical public health issue with adverse effects on children, families and has a tremendous adverse effect on unit morale and mission readiness.

ALCOAST 281/17 – 22nd Women of Color Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics Conference honorees

Congratulations to the 2017 Women of Color in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Award recipients: Ms. Debra Owens, District 8 Spectrum Manager of Base NOLA and MK1 Angel Leott, the Assistant Engineering Petty Officer of MSST Boston as recipients of the Technology Rising Star Award. Having distinguished themselves in STEM areas while epitomizing the core values of the Coast Guard, our members will be recognized for their achievements at the 22nd Women of Color STEM Conference.

ACN 102/17 – Hazardous Waste funding standard planned revisions

This message announces planned changes to the hazardous waste (HW) funding standard and distribution of funds for HW management and requires field level reporting.

ALCGPSC 115/17 – POST-9/11 G.I. Bill DMDC MILCONNECT transfer of education benefits portal error

Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) is experiencing issues with personnel attempting to transfer their Chapter 33 Post-9/11 G.I. Bill education benefits to their dependents. Eligible dependents are not showing up in the DMDC milConnect Post-9/11 G.I. Bill Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) portal. DMDC is working on a fix for this issue and hopes to have it repaired soon.

ALCGPSC 109/17 – Announcement of the 2017 Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA) Grateful Nation Award Coast Guard recipient

Congratulations to Maritime Enforcement Specialist Chief (MEC) Robert M. Freeman assigned to Port Security Unit 307, Clearwater, Florida, who has been selected for recognition at the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs 15th Annual Grateful Nation Awards Ceremony.  The Grateful Nation Awards honor an outstanding representative from each of the Military services who has distinguished him or herself by exceptional service while deployed in direct support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, INHERENT RESOLVE, or FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.
