12 Days on Polar Star

Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star is currently headed to Antarctica for its annual mission, Operation Deep Freeze. During Antarctic deployments, the cutter’s primary mission is to break a channel through the sea ice to ensure that resupply ships can reach the U.S. Antarctic Program’s McMurdo Research Station in the Ross Sea. Resupply ships use the channel to bring food, fuel, and other goods so the scientist and researchers can make it through another winter. In addition to these duties, Polar Star also serves as a scientific research platform with five laboratories and accommodations for up to 20 scientists.

The crewmembers aboard the Polar Star will conduct a five-month patrol extending over the holidays and into the new year. As many of you can relate; it is difficult to be away from family and friends during this time of year. A couple of crewmembers put together a poem about the operation to build moral and get into the holiday spirit.
